II.     Crime Update

Chris Williams with the Columbia Police Department gave a monthly update on crime in the Rosewood area. Several arrests have been made this month in the cases of local home invasions and an armed robbery. We were all reminded to keep our vehicles locked, and to remove/hide valuables to prevent auto break-ins. Chris reminded everyone of his contact information and requests that we leave the date and time of our calls to him, and to please leave our contact information and a time we can be reached.

Ralph Pierson from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department was present, but did not have an opportunity to speak before he needed to leave.

III.     Opt-in/Overlay Update

The South Kilbourne Neighborhood association is active again. The first meeting was on September 4 and was very successful.

The Edisto Court Neighborhood Association is still active.

Travis mentioned that the RCC is moving back into an umbrella organization over the active neighborhood associations again.

The definition of Rosewood by city map was introduced.

There will be an important RCC meeting in October. Notification efforts are underway to insure that property owners are able to vote in opting in to the City of Columbia’s neighborhood plan - or not. There is a 2 year measure, limited in scope, that allows neighborhoods to decide on historical preservation issues or overlays.

 IV.     Light Up Rosewood

There was a historical discussion about the 2008 Light Up Rosewood event. Volunteers are needed for this year’s event. Dates have not been decided. The RCC is hopeful that the Rosewood Merchants Association will participate in this year’s event.

V.     Montessori School Presentation

The Montessori School of Columbia is located at 2807 Oceola Street. They are seeking support from the RCC in efforts to expand their facilities. They have gained property surrounding the school and hope to move some of their existing students into a new building. They are working with the City of Columbia to get approval for the project.

The Montessori School hopes to save the trees on the site. Parking will be one of the problems that they are working to solve. They will also need to move a very old house from it’s current location in order to make their plan work. The house has been offered “free for the taking”, but there are some issues with with relocating it because of it’s age and condition.

VI.    RCC Officer Nominations

Nominations have begun for for the next officers for the RCC. Travis Wheeler is at the end of his second term as RCC President and will not be eligible to serve again next year. Each term runs for 2 consecutive years.

Nominations will be open until the next RCC meeting on October 16.

VII.    Adjourn

The next meeting will be October 16, 2008.
